The Swedish tabloid "Expressen" has been sentenced for publishing photos on which dying Swedish Foreign Minister Anna Lindh can be seen. The Swedish press council said that the interest of the relatives for privacy protection stand higher than the public's right to information. "Expressen" published the photos soon after Ms Lindh's death. The photos clearly show the apparently unconscious foreign minister being taken away on a stretcher after she was stabbed while shopping at a Stockholm shopping centre on 10 September 2003. According to spokesperson Christel Ericson, "Expressen" has been ordered to pay 2,700 euros and publish the complaint. The "intrusive" way in which the photos were presented has violated the press ethics code, the council stated. Ms Lindh died soon after the attack in a hospital. In January, 25-year-old Mijailo Mijailovic was found guilty of the attack.

Visa pour l'Image is having financial difficulties. But, according to festival director Jean-Francois Leroy, Visa will continue for at least one more year.

The problems began earlier this year when Kodak, one of the festival's longtime sponsors, said its contribution would be less than in previous years. Leroy didn't immediately sign Kodak's contract, instead hoping he could find other sponsors to take over. "I thought it would be easy to find new sponsorship solutions but I've been working on that night and day for four months with little success," Leroy says. "The big problem is Kodak now, but we are still in talks."

Kodak spokesperson Audrey Jonckheer says the company never intended to pull out of Visa pour l'Image entirely, but simply asked to tie their contribution to the dollar, which was a more steady currency than the fluctuating Euro. "We have tightened our belts, but Visa is incredibly important to us. Visa is incredibly important to the industry. We have offered less but it's still in the healthy six-figure range," Jonckheer says.

Leroy puts the overall cost of running the festival at $1 million. But with costs rising every year, Leroy, who has a 30 percent stake in the festival (Hachette Filipacchi owns the remaining 70 percent), has been forced to consider the alternatives.

If the festival does indeed happen this year, Leroy says the registration fee will increase to 50 Euro from 30 Euro. With 3,000 registered participants last year, the resulting revenue in 2004 stands to be significant. Leroy also plans to charge larger companies more for their exhibition booths. "I don't think Getty or Corbis should pay the same amount as Redux or Polaris," he says. "Everyone needs Visa, so at a point they will have to pay for it."

While costs for registrants are most certainly to go up, Leroy is not willing to cut amenities. Leroy says Visa will still cover airfare and hotel expenses for all photographers he chooses to exhibit; last year he showed the work of close to 30 photographers. "I will not make a small Visa," Leroy says. "If I have to make a small Visa I will give up. If I find a solution it will be my solution and people will think I'm pretentious for saying this but it will remain my festival."

In order for the festival to continue, Leroy says photographers may have to step up and show their support. One solution Leroy is considering adopting is to have photographers donate prints for a curated auction. Leroy would select his favorite prints from the festival's history, and the money from the sales would go towards operating costs. Leroy says banks would be more willing to loan money if the prints were put up as collateral. "I created this festival for photographers, and I'm sure photographers will save the festival," he says.

Leroy says the other two main sponsors, Hachette and Canon, have signed contracts through 2005, and the city of Perpignan is supporting his efforts to keep the festival going. While Kodak has indeed fallen tough times--a slow move to digital has forced the company to more than 20 percent of its work force over the past year--Jonckheer says it remains committed to Visa. The value it brings is immeasurable, she says.

"No other event can claim to have so many people concentrated in one little town for seven days," Jonckheer says. "We sell solutions and products, and we can do that in a relaxed, casual and focused way at Visa. Business can be accomplished and relationships can be strengthened, and that's what photographers get out of it and that's what the industry gets out of it."

Leroy says he is still hoping to find another major sponsor in the coming weeks and should have a definitive announcement on the 2004 Visa pour l'Image by the end of March.

Inmiddels heeft Billingham zijn terrein verlegt naar landschapsfotografie, een groter contrast is bijna niet denkbaar. En wat levert het Billingham als kunstenaar op? We vinden het nogal merkwaardig dat iemand die voor camera's heeft geposeerd, nu opeens niet gezien wil worden.

Aldus de hoofdredactie van het Algemeen Dagblad die Dutroux herkenbaar op de voorpagina zette.

Fotograaf Evert-Jan Daniels (35) van de Haagsche Courant is woensdagmiddag in de door de aardbeving getroffen Marokkaanse havenstad Al Hoceima korte tijd opgepakt geweest door de plaatselijke politie.

Daniels was foto's aan het maken van het uitdelen van hulpgoederen aan de bevolking. Dat verliep nogal chaotisch en met veel machtsvertoon van de politie. Daniels wilde de grimmige sfeer vastleggen, maar zijn camera werd afgepakt en hij werd in een politiebusje naar het hoofdkantoor afgevoerd waar hij enige tijd heeft gezeten. De Amsterdamse wethouder Ahmed Aboutaleb, die een privébezoek aflegt in het rampgebied, heeft dankzij zijn contacten bij de autoriteiten, Daniels snel weer vrij gekregen.

Bij het Britse mannenblad FHM zijn 3 sets exclusieve foto's gestolen.

Apart from issues of copyright and exclusivity, the photographs are potentially embarrassing for the magazine because they show how the images have been digitally altered for publication.

De Concentra-kranten - Het Belang van Limburg en Gazet van Antwerpen - publiceren donderdag een herkenbare foto van Marc Dutroux. De foto bedekt de hele voorpagina van Het Belang van Limburg. In De Gazet van Antwerpen is deze foto, kleiner afgebeeld, terug te vinden op pagina 10.



Het Belang van Limburg noemt de vraag van Dutroux om onherkenbaar gemaakt te worden ronduit belachelijk. Dat Betty Marchal, de moeder van An, opriep geen gevolg te geven aan de vraag van Dutroux is een reden te meer, aldus de Limburgse krant.

Ook La Libre Match publiceert donderdag een herkenbare foto van Dutroux in de beklaagdenbox. Bovendien heeft het Franstalige tijdschrift foto's van Dutroux in de gevangenis van Aarlen, onder meer van zijn cel en Dutroux in de gevangenisgang. Woensdag publiceerde Het Laatste Nieuws al een herkenbare foto van Dutroux. Daarop verbood assisenvoorzitter Stéphane Goux de fotografen van die krant de toegang tot de assisenzaal. Meester Ronny Baudewyn, de advocaat van Marc Dutroux, zei dat hij klacht gaat indienen tegen alle media die foto's verspreiden waarop zijn cliënt in de assisenzaal herkenbaar is.

Update: De fotografen van Het Belang van Limburg en de Gazet van Antwerpen is de toegang geweigerd tot de gerechtszaal.

De discussie over het balkje voor de ogen van Dutroux is woensdag verhevigd. Twee Vlaamse kranten hebben het balkje weggelaten. Ze stellen dat Dutroux' verzoek om privacy niet geldt: hij liet zich eerder wel fotograferen en bovendien gaat het hier om 'actualiteitsberichtgeving'.

Hoofdverdachte Dutroux had maandag, bij aanvang van het proces tegen hem in het Zuid-Belgische Aarlen, gevraagd om niet herkenbaar in beeld te komen. De meeste cameramensen en fotografen, ook die uit Nederland, hielden zich tot dusver aan dat verzoek. Gerechtstekenaars portretteerden hem echter wel, wat tot enige discussie leidde.

Dutroux' advocaat Baudewijn kondigde woensdagochtend aan klachten in te dienen tegen media die foto's publiceren van een herkenbare Dutroux in de rechtszaal. ,,De regels zijn er voor iedereen. Media die dergelijke foto's publiceren, houden zich niet aan de regels. Iedereen heeft recht op zijn privacy en dus ook mijn cliënt'', aldus mr. Baudewijn.

Het Franse persbureau AFP heeft te horen gekregen dat het drie dagen lang geen fotograaf de rechtbank in mag sturen. Dat is de straf omdat AFP maandagmorgen een foto van Dutroux de wereld in heeft gezonden zonder balkje voor 's mans ogen. ,,Dat was een vergissing, we wisten niet van het verbod. We hebben nog onze abonnees gevraagd de foto niet te plaatsen maar dat is helaas toch gebeurd'', aldus Eric Baradat van de fotoredactie.

A fashion photographer takes pictures of models dressed in colorful outfits, walking next to the separation barrier Israel is building in the Palestinian village of A-Tur, in the outskirts of Jerusalem. An Israeli clothing chain held a photo shoot for their summer catalogue at Israel's West Bank barrier. The firm said they were trying to raise awareness about the barrier among what she called a mostly 'uninterested' Israeli public.

Japanese precision equipment maker Nikon Corp , encouraged by a recovering semiconductor market and confident in its new line of digital cameras, is banking on a surge in profit and sales in the new business year.

Nikon President Teruo Shimamura told Reuters in an interview on Tuesday he expects the company to post a group operating profit of 30-35 billion yen ($275-321 million) in the year starting on April 1, far above its estimate for this year of one billion yen.

Fotograaf Anton Corbijn krijgt de KLM Paul Huf Award 2004. Deze oeuvreprijs gaat naar hem wegens de grote herkenbaarheid van zijn werk, zo meldde de jury maandag. De onderscheiding, waaraan 20.000 euro is verbonden, krijgt de fotograaf op 14 maart uitgereikt.

De Paul Huf Award werd in 1999 ingesteld. In dat jaar fotografeerde Huf vijftig jaar voor de KLM, bestond die luchtvaartmaatschappij tachtig jaar en werd Huf zelf 75 jaar. Sindsdien is de award toegekend aan Oliviero Toscani (1999), aan Co Rentmeester (2001) en Annie Leibovitz (2002). De prijs zal, na Corbijn, opnieuw worden uitgereikt in 2006. Paul Huf is in januari 2002 overleden. Anton Corbijn krijgt de prijs op 14 maart overhandigd, omdat Huf dan tachtig jaar zou zijn geworden. KLM-directeur L. van Wijk reikt de prijs uit.

Volgens de jury krijgt iemand die naar een foto van Corbijn kijkt telkens het gevoel meer te zien dan er feitelijk zichtbaar is. ,,Het werk van Corbijn bestaat altijd uit zeer krachtige beelden, openhartig, soms rauw maar nooit ruw. Een foto van Corbijn is niet alleen een portret van een kunstenaar, maar door het beeldgebruik ook een visitekaartje van Corbijn.''

De fotograaf heeft zich vooral gespecialiseerd in het in beeld brengen van beroemde artiesten, onder wie U2, Miles Davis, David Bowie, Björk, Keith Richards en Frank Sinatra. Corbijn is behalve fotograaf ook actief als grafisch ontwerper van posters en cd-hoezen. Verder werkt hij als regisseur van videoclips en korte films en als podiumontwerper voor onder meer de groep Depeche Mode.
